Chinese AI startup DeepSeek will brief the UN Security Council on artificial intelligence risks this week, sources told Reuters on Tuesday, putting a Chinese lab on the same stage as OpenAI and Anthropic as world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly.
The 15-member Council meets on Wednesday, September 23, to discuss AI and international security. The session was convened by France. OpenAI CEO Sam Altman plans to brief the meeting in person, alongside representatives from Anthropic and China’s Moonshot, according to the report.
Why this meeting matters
The briefing comes a day after OpenAI publicly called on the United States to take the lead in developing global technical standards for frontier AI. In a blog post on September 21, the company argued that coordinated international standards are needed as AI systems grow more capable — a position that lands differently with DeepSeek literally at the table.
It is also a sign of how fast AI governance is moving. The Security Council held its first-ever meeting on AI only in 2023. Three years later, the world’s most powerful security body is hearing directly from the labs building the technology.
The bigger picture
The guest list itself tells a story: American and Chinese AI companies briefing the same Council session, even as their governments compete fiercely on AI. Industry voices have increasingly called for a “coordinated slowdown” of AI development — Wednesday’s session will show whether any of that rhetoric translates into international action.
TechXova will update this story as details emerge from the September 23 briefing.
